Today is the first day of autumn, which is my absolute favorite time of year.
I love fall for many reasons, but I especially love the way the crisp & cool air matches perfectly with the crunchy sound made by the leaves under my feet as I walk. I love that this time of year reminds me of my loved ones for some reason. It makes me feel safe, and gives me an overall sense of comfort that the other seasons just don’t seem to provide.
The winter is so cold and brutal (at least where I’m from), and it brings a whole variety of stress and anxiety from the harsh weather. The spring comes and goes far too quickly. Although the newly bloomed flowers are beautiful, they are not with us long enough to truly be appreciated. In the summer there’s so much excitement in the air for everyone. Even though I’m not a child anymore and I don’t spend much time around kids either, I still feel the energy I use to feel when I was out of school for the summer. There’s so much going on, and so much anticipation for the warmer months of the year. And then there’s autumn. For me, it symbolizes things calming down. Everyone is getting back into their routines after summer, which brings an overwhelming sense of stillness.
Since I’ve become a Yoga teacher, I’ve started studying myself a bit more. I noticed that even before I started teaching and practicing Yoga regularly, I was always a big fan of being still and calm. I’ve always been told that I have a calming energy about me, and that I’m “soothing” to listen to and be around. Therefore, it makes perfect sense why I would be drawn towards the autumn. It matches my personality and brings me home.
So, for all you fall-lovers out there, I collected a list of 10 things that I love during the autumn months. Take a look! Maybe you’ll discover something new to love this fall!
1. “Fall in Love” Pumpkin Spiced coffee
I found these coffee grounds at TJMaxx, and it was love at first sight. I use to love to get the PSL (pumpkin spiced latte) at Starbucks, but they have SO MUCH sugar. I just can’t do that to myself again this year. This way, if I brew coffee at home with pumpkin spice flavor already infused in the coffee grinds, I’ll still get that spicy pumpkin flavor without all the added sugar. YAY!
2. Big Giant Mugs
I recently got these mugs from my old job that are massive, and they say “Namaste” on the side. The namaste has rubbed off a little bit, which is disappointing, but I still love the fact that the mugs are huge. I can add as much almond milk to my coffee or tea as I like!
3. Infinity Scarves
I got this huge, chunky knit infinity scarf from Accessorize in London a couple of years ago, and I’ve loved it ever since. It smells a little like lavender oil since I wore it to Yoga class a couple of times, but that kind of makes me love it even more.
4. Fleece Blankets
Its not fall without a fleece blanket. Nothing keeps you warm quite like a fleece blanket does.
5. Warm-Textured Tights
When I’m not in my Yoga clothes, I love wearing textured tights with skirts and boots. Its another thing that I can only really do in the autumn months.
6. Chunky Knit Sweaters
Need I say more? Nothing brings the coziness quite like a chunky knit sweater.
7. Pumpkin Pie
This is the one indulgence I will be allowing myself this fall season. I absolutely LOVE pumpkin pie. Its my all time favorite dessert, and I can only really have it around this time of year. Therefore, I will be having it. Sorry self, you’re going to have to deal with that for a few months.
You may be wondering, “Christina, you can listen to Coldplay all year round! Duh!” Well, I personally love Coldplay, but I do not really listen to them during the other months of the year. Its a weird thing that I have with being extremely sensitive, and Coldplay evokes some serious emotional responses within me sometimes. Therefore, I can only really listen to them when I’m at my most comfortable state, which only really happens during this time of year. I also feel like their music matches the energy of this season really well. It just all fits together. Call me crazy, but Coldplay, for me, is an extremely autumn band.
9. Hot Yoga
I use to love hot Yoga a lot more than I do now. I learned a lot about how its not really the best for your heart, and people need to be really careful while overexerting themselves and their muscles during heated Yoga classes. However, if you know your body really REALLY well, then when it starts to get colder, a hot Yoga class is a really nice way to warm up. I am slightly obsessed with candles, especially this time of year. In home-type stores, you’ll almost always find me by the candle aisle sniffing all the new fall scents they have out. I still have yet to buy one this year, but its definitely on the horizon for me very soon.
