As you may know, I am very much into “self-help” books, “new age” thinking, and all things in between that make people better and happier. The reason why I used quotations around those terms is because I feel those are just labels put in place by individuals who don’t truly understand their significance. Anyway, that’s not why I’m here today (perhaps another topic for another post? let me know!). The reason why I’m here today is because I’d like to talk briefly about 4 people who made a huge difference in my life in 2014, and 1 person who I just recently came across that I will now most likely be following throughout this year.
What these people stress quite often is that in order to be successful in what you’re doing, you need mentors, or examples of people who have done it before you so you have something to model yourself around. Of course, you also need to be true to yourself, but it’s always good to have something to visualize before you actually get to where you want to be in life. In my case, I have a lot of people that I love around me, but no one that is currently living the life that I want to live. They have different jobs and are in completely different circumstances than what I would like to ultimately achieve, and therefore, I had to look elsewhere to find some mentors.
In came YouTube to the rescue, which is where I found all of the 5 people on my list. A lot of people turn to reading and listening to books as mentors (even some listed below), and I love to do those things too, but I absorb information the best when its in the form of a film. I don’t know what it is in my brain, but it LOVES film. I just can’t get enough videos, and my favorite thing of 2014 was definitely watching these inspirational people on their YouTube channels.
So, two of these people in particular are quite famous, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you already know who they are. However, if you don’t know who they are, then get on it NOW! Seriously. These are some of the most inspiring, goal oriented, peaceful, and happy people that I have ever encountered, and there is a reason why their popularity is growing more every single day. So, without further ado, here’s my list:
5 People You Should Be Listening To
1. Mimi Ikonn
This girl is awesome! She is one of the owners and founders of Luxy Hair, which is a brand of hair extensions that clip in. She is also the owner of two popular YouTube channels, where she often discusses the struggles from her childhood living in Azerbaijan and then moving to Canada with her family, and how she was able to overcome all of it. Overall, I know some may say that it’s hard to gage someone’s personality from a few videos on the internet, but I can honestly tell that she is a genuine person. Unlike a lot of other YouTubers with millions of subscribers, she always takes the time out to comment back to her viewers. I personally have received a few comments from her saying, “Thank you” and replying to what I’ve said. She also is a vegetarian, and all of her beauty advice is for products that are cruelty free (yet another reason to love her). Anyway, if you haven’t already discovered Mimi’s videos, do it! You won’t be disappointed, and she is a wonderful role model that has definitely taken part in shaping my life over the past year.
2. Alex Ikonn
Are you noticing that Mimi & Alex have the same last name? Well, that’s because they’re married! Actually, I discovered Mimi through one of Alex’s motivational videos. He is another owner and founder of Luxy Hair, and he also co-founded the 5 Minute Journal. Both Mimi & Alex currently live in London, run 3 successful YouTube channels and two successful businesses (that I know of) collectively. They are the definition of a powerhouse couple without having to be in the complete spotlight like JayZ and Beyonce. Anyway, Alex is a very smart and down to earth business man who gives wonderful advice about how to be successful in life. He’s definitely not one of those “scary” business people, so he’s very likable, but you can tell that he’s not a pushover either. I think the reason why I was drawn to Mimi & Alex was because they were “my kind of successful.” I don’t want to be Donald Trump. I want to continue being myself (a yoga teacher who wants to make the world a better place), but still be successful. I think that Alex and Mimi have definitely achieved that for themselves.
3. Marie Forleo
Marie Forleo for me, is the big time. She not only has written a NY Times bestselling book, but has a wildly successful business of her own, AND has even been on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday. I know a lot of you are thinking, “Well, duh. Of course I know Marie Forleo!” However, if you have been living under a rock (like I had been until 2014), then you HAVE to check her out! No, really. What are you still doing here? Go. Click my link and go now!
If I could just morph into some sort of combination of Marie Forleo & Gabrielle Bernstein right now, I would be the happiest girl alive (not that I’m not happy being myself, but I’m trying to stress a point here). Gabby B. is also a NY Times bestselling author, Oprah Super Soul Sunday guest, motivational speaker, kundalini yoga teacher, and social media mastermind. She focuses a lot on the spiritual aspect of life, which is something that I personally was starting to lose sight of for a while. Anyway, she is awesome. I am now reading her latest book, Miracles Now, which is a book that I listed on my 50 Books to Read Before 30 list. As of now, I can definitely see this book becoming something that I can turn back to whenever I need some guidance or support. I highly recommend checking it out as well as another book of her’s that I’ve read, May Cause Miracles. She’s just so awesome.
5. Tai Lopez
I discovered Tai Lopez through one of Alex Ikonn’s recent videos. He’s the guy who did the TED talk about reading 1 book a day (seriously, where does he find the time for that? I barely had time to write this post). However, the fact that he has read so many books makes him one of the most fascinating people I have ever watched. He definitely talks a lot, but he’s one of those people who you want to hear and absorb every word he has to say. Everything that he talked about in Alex’s video was interesting, which ultimately led me to subscribe to his own YouTube channel & follow his blog. I still have yet to truly dive into what Tai Lopez has put out there, but I am so excited to get started. How amazing would it be if you could read one book each day?! Anyway, definitely check out his work if you haven’t already!
